Disclaimer
llms.txt is a proposed standard, not an official one. No major search engine or AI provider has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to decide rankings or citations. It's quick and harmless to add, but it won't fix crawlability, content or authority problems. Check those with the AI crawler and rendering checkers. Generated files are a starting point: review the wording before publishing.
Privacy: URLs you check are fetched once to produce the result and aren't stored.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short, curated map of your most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, and the format is documented at llmstxt.org.
The format is simple:
# Site name: the only required line> One-paragraph summaryof what the site or business is- optional paragraphs with extra context
## Sectionheadings with lists of links:- [Page title](https://...): what the page covers- an optional
## Optionalsection for secondary pages
How the generator works
- It reads your XML sitemap (from robots.txt, or /sitemap.xml), or the list of URLs you paste.
- It prioritises top-level pages, then fetches each page's title and meta description.
- It groups pages into sections by their first folder (for example /services, /insights, /case-studies).
- You edit the site name, summary, section names and descriptions, then copy or download the file.
Upload the file to the root of your domain so it loads at /llms.txt. On Next.js, put it in the public folder; on WordPress, upload it to the site root or use an SEO plugin that supports it; on Shopify, serve it through a redirect to a file in your theme assets or an app.
What the checker validates
- The file exists at /llms.txt, returns 200 and is served as text
- It starts with a single H1 and has a blockquote summary
- Sections use ## headings with Markdown link lists
- Links are absolute, and a sample of them load without errors or redirects
- No HTML (a common sign your server returns a web page instead of the file)
- Whether an llms-full.txt companion file exists
llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml
| File | Purpose | Who reads it |
|---|---|---|
| robots.txt | Tells crawlers what they may and may not fetch | All major crawlers |
| sitemap.xml | Lists every indexable URL for discovery | Search engines |
| llms.txt | A short, human-written guide to your most useful pages | Some AI tools and agents; no confirmed use by major search or AI providers |
Does llms.txt actually help?
Honestly: nobody can prove it does yet. I add it to client sites by default because it costs minutes and does no harm. But AI visibility still depends on the basics: crawlers being allowed in, content being in the HTML, and other sites corroborating who you are. My llms.txt guide covers the evidence in more depth.
FAQ
llms.txt Generator & Checker: common questions
Short answers to what people ask most about this tool and topic.
At the root of your domain so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text (text/plain or text/markdown) with UTF-8 encoding. Subdomains need their own file.
llms.txt is a short index of links with descriptions. llms-full.txt is an optional companion that contains the full text of your key pages in one file, so a tool can read everything without following links.
Google hasn't said it uses llms.txt for Search or AI Overviews. Treat it as an optional extra for AI tools and agents, not a ranking factor.
Whenever you add, remove or rename important pages. A stale llms.txt that links to redirected or deleted pages is worse than a short accurate one.
No. Your XML sitemap does that. llms.txt should point to the pages that best explain what you do: main services or products, key guides, pricing or FAQs, and contact.
