BACKGROUND

The challenge

In a previous agency leadership role, I led the content SEO for this firm. Its blog brought in very little non-branded search traffic — the visitors it needed most.

The aim was to attract people searching for workforce topics who didn't yet know the brand, using blog content that could compete with the pages already ranking.

Client and agency not named for confidentiality. I led the strategy; the work was delivered with my team at the time.

EXECUTION

What we did

01

Competitor-benchmarked content

Created blog content benchmarked against the top five ranking competitors for each topic.

02

Trend-led articles

Published articles on future workforce trends.

03

Snippet-ready formatting

Used bullets, short paragraphs, tables and lists to target featured snippets and AI Overviews.

04

Clear structure and tone

Kept a clear heading structure and a conversational, easy-to-read tone.

05

Audits and indexing

Ran regular SEO audits, fixed issues with developers and made sure new blog posts were indexed.

STRATEGIC LESSON

The takeaway

Benchmarking each article against the pages already ranking sets a realistic bar for depth and format, which is why it beats publishing to a content calendar alone.
